Taíno Bay is Puerto Plata's city cruise port, opened in 2021 on the old cargo pier. From the port exit you can walk to the historic centre in about 10 to 15 minutes; Gregorio Luperón Airport (POP) is about 22 km away, 25 to 35 minutes by car, and Sosúa about 25 km.
It's the easiest port on the north coast for exploring on your own: you can see the centre on foot (Umbrella Street, the central park, the Amber Museum, Fortaleza San Felipe) and use a taxi only for the cable car, the beaches or the 27 Charcos de Damajagua waterfalls. Several cruise lines use it; Amber Cove, about 15 minutes west, mostly takes Carnival ships.
Getting off the ship
Inside the port there's a free pool with a bar, restaurants, craft shops, an adventure park with a zipline and free wifi with sign-up. Free tuk-tuks run you from the ship to the port entrance (tipping is expected). The port beach has loungers and hammocks, but swimming isn't allowed.
Registered taxis wait at the exit with fixed fares to the main sights. There are no meters: confirm the price per vehicle (not per person) before you get in. Published fares vary a lot: short in-town hops from around RD$150 to RD$300 (about US$2.50 to US$5) at local rates, and around US$30 to US$35 per vehicle on the cruise-passenger rates to the centre or the cable car. Check the fare board at the rank.
Walking into town is easy in daylight: about 1.1 km to Umbrella Street and close to 3 km to Fortaleza San Felipe along the malecón (waterfront). Bring water and sunscreen, as midday is very hot.

Airport transfers
If you start or end a cruise in Puerto Plata, Gregorio Luperón Airport (POP) is about 22 km east, 25 to 35 minutes along the coast road. Airport taxis have fixed fares to the port and POP has an Uber pickup area. A private transfer costs around US$35 to US$55 per vehicle in 2026.
Some cruise lines offer an airport shuttle for embarking passengers; check with yours. When disembarking, allow at least 3 hours between leaving the ship and an international flight: getting out of the port with luggage, the drive and check-in at POP. If your flight leaves from Santiago (STI), allow about 1.5 hours by road.
Tips
- The historic centre is easy on foot; save the taxi for the cable car, the beaches or Damajagua.
- Agree with the driver whether the price is one way or includes waiting and the return; for half-day trips a waiting package is usually better value.
- Carry small notes in dollars or pesos: change usually comes in pesos.
- Plan to be back at the port at least 45 minutes before all-aboard, especially if you go to Sosúa or Cabarete.
