Santiago to Puerto Plata is about 70 km and 1 to 1.5 hours on the road over the Cordillera Septentrional. Metro Tours charged RD$275 in 2026 (about US$4.50); a private transfer, around US$80 to US$120.

This route links Cibao airport (STI) and the country's second city with the north coast. Plenty of travellers fly into Santiago, which sometimes has better fares from the US, and head down to Puerto Plata, Sosúa or Cabarete.

The road is short but mountainous: bends, long climbs and slow trucks. The bus is comfortable and cheap; a private transfer makes sense from STI airport, with children, or if you're going straight to Sosúa or Cabarete.

By private car or driving yourself

From Santiago the road heads north, climbs the Cordillera Septentrional through areas such as Navarrete or Altamira depending on the route, and drops down to Puerto Plata. We found no published toll on the main route, although if you use the Santiago ring road to bypass the city there may be one. The mountain stretch has tight bends, fog on the high parts when it rains and slow trucks; by car it rarely takes less than an hour.

A private transfer for 1 to 3 people was around US$80 to US$120 in 2026 between the two cities, and a bit more from STI airport or through to Sosúa and Cabarete. A group van, around US$100 to US$150.

Other options

Uber works in Santiago and Puerto Plata, and you can sometimes get the full trip, although pickup at STI airport has its own rules. Renting a car at STI is a good idea if you'll explore the north coast. If you're coming from abroad and the coast is your final stop, also compare direct flights into Puerto Plata (POP).

Tips

  • Metro departures that continue to Sosúa save you the taxi from Puerto Plata.
  • Avoid the mountain stretch at night and in heavy rain.
  • If you land at STI, a direct transfer to Puerto Plata or Cabarete saves going into the city to the terminal first.
  • Bring a layer: the bus air conditioning is strong.
