Getting to Puerto Plata

The airport is 15 to 30 minutes from Playa Dorada and downtown; Santiago is an hour and a half over the mountains

Puerto Plata

Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP) is about 15 km from Playa Dorada, 15 to 25 minutes, and about 18 km from downtown Puerto Plata, 20 to 30 minutes. It is a city with a seafront Malecón, a cable car up Isabel de Torres, two nearby cruise ports (Taino Bay in town and Amber Cove in Maimón) and resort coast on both sides.

POP is the natural arrival. Cibao Airport in Santiago (STI) is the alternative when it has better flights, especially from the US.

POP · Puerto Plata Airport 15 km 15 to 30 min East of the city, on the road to Sosúa. Fixed-fare taxis at the exit.
STI · Santiago Airport 85 km 1 h 15 min to 1 h 40 min More flights from the US. Mountain road over the Cordillera Septentrional.

Which airport to fly into

Fly into Puerto Plata (POP) if you can. The airport is east of the city, between Puerto Plata and Sosúa, and the coast road gets you to Playa Dorada in 15 to 25 minutes, downtown in 20 to 30, and Cofresí or Maimón, to the west, in 30 to 45. POP gets direct flights from North America and Europe, many in high season.

Cibao Airport (STI), in Santiago, has more frequencies from US cities with large Dominican communities, such as New York and Miami. From there it is about 85 km and 75 to 100 minutes on the Santiago to Puerto Plata mountain road, with curves and trucks; by day it is a scenic drive, at night a slow one. Santo Domingo (SDQ) is about 3.5 to 4 hours away and not worth it unless you are combining destinations.

Areas and transfer times

Playa Dorada, a gated complex of resorts and a golf course east of downtown, is the area closest to POP: 15 to 25 minutes. Costa Dorada and the hotels along the Malecón in town are 20 to 30 minutes away. To the west, Costambar and Cofresí (near Ocean World) are 30 to 40 minutes from POP, and Maimón, by the Amber Cove port, 35 to 45.

Punta Rucia, on the northwest coast, is sometimes sold as Puerto Plata, but it is about 2 hours from POP by road: a different trip. If you want to walk out, pick downtown or Playa Dorada; for a quiet resort, Cofresí or Maimón, with a slightly longer transfer.

Getting around

Uber has operated in Puerto Plata since 2017, and a 2025 guide lists it among the three cities in the country where it works, alongside Santo Domingo and Santiago. There are usually cars in town, though fewer than in the capital, and availability drops on the outskirts and at night. Taxis from local associations charge fixed fares by zone; the Playa Dorada resorts have stands at their entrances.

Carros públicos and guaguas run along the coast road between Puerto Plata, Sosúa and Cabarete frequently during the day for a few pesos. Motoconchos are everywhere in town. The historic center, the Malecón and the San Felipe fort area are walkable. Caribe Tours and Metro Tours buses leave Puerto Plata for Santiago and Santo Domingo.

Tips

  • If you land at STI, avoid the mountain road at night and in rain.
  • With association taxis, ask the zone fare before getting in; fares are set by destination.
  • On cruise days downtown and the cable car get busy; go early.
  • For a day trip to Sosúa or Cabarete, carros públicos are cheap and frequent.
