BusRD$550 to RD$650

Santo Domingo to Puerto Plata is about 215 km and 3 to 3.5 hours by car on the Autopista Duarte to Santiago and then the road over the Cordillera Septentrional. Metro Tours charged RD$550 in 2026 (about US$9) and Caribe Tours around RD$600 to RD$650; a private transfer, around US$200 to US$280.

This route is well served by coaches: two big companies, terminals in both cities and departures from early morning into the evening. For solo travellers and couples with normal luggage, the bus is the most practical option in the country after the Punta Cana run.

A private transfer wins if you are heading to Sosúa or Cabarete (the bus ends in Puerto Plata city, apart from some departures that continue to Sosúa), if you leave SDQ on a late arrival, or if there are four or more of you.

By private car or driving yourself

The Autopista Duarte (DR-1) leaves Santo Domingo heading north through Bonao and La Vega and reaches Santiago in about 2 to 2.5 hours. The Duarte toll at km 25 charges RD$100 per light car since January 2025. After Santiago the road climbs over the mountains to Puerto Plata, with bends and slow trucks; that 70 km stretch usually takes more than an hour.

A private transfer for 1 to 3 people was around US$200 to US$280 in 2026, and a van around US$250 to US$340. The Duarte is the busiest highway in the country: on Friday afternoons getting out of the capital can add an hour, and at Easter or Christmas the traffic to the Cibao is very heavy. There are plenty of roadside stops, especially between Bonao and La Vega.

Other options

If you're flying in from abroad, flying straight into Puerto Plata (POP) usually saves this whole trip: the airport sits between Puerto Plata and Sosúa. Domestic flights from Santo Domingo to Puerto Plata are scarce and change often. A rental car makes sense if you want to stop in Jarabacoa or Santiago on the way. Cheaper guaguas and shared cars also leave from around km 9 of the Autopista Duarte, with more stops and less comfort.

Tips

  • If you're going to Sosúa, look for the Metro departures that continue there (7:00, 11:00, 2:00 and 4:00 Monday to Saturday in 2026) and skip the taxi from Puerto Plata.
  • Sit on the right-hand side for the climb over the mountains towards Puerto Plata to see the valley and then the sea.
  • Avoid leaving the capital on a Friday after 3 pm.
  • Metro's last 7:00 pm departure reaches Puerto Plata after dark: arrange the onward taxi in advance.
